With Biden signaling he may stepping down as the Democratic nominee as early as Sunday, the search will be on for his successor with a little less than a month to decide. While many will back Vice President Harris, there are other options that seem like they’d do much better in a head to head matchup. The ticket worth looking into most seriously is Whitmer/Shapiro. Let’s take a look at how such a ticket would fare.

The case for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer:

She won by 10.6% in 2022.

She has a current approval rating of 57.2%

She has a current disapproval rating of 38.5%

Net Approval: +18.7%

Governor Whitmer was instrumental in legalizing cannabis in Michigan, repealed her state’s abortion ban, passed universal background checks for guns, enacted universal Pre-K, expanded Medicaid, enacted the largest increase in grants/tuition for higher education in the country. She took her state from deficit to surplus, enacted automatic voter registration and enacted protections for the LGBT community (of which her daughter is a member). She’s also expressed support for single payer healthcare. She has dealt with crisis as Governor presiding over COVID and an attempted plot to kidnap her.
