What to expect from a Republican House of Representatives

If polls and historical trends are to be believed, Democrats are set to lose control of the US House of Representatives for the first time since 2019 next year. What does this mean for the next two years?

While the House of Representatives has less power than the Senate, losing it poses a number of problems for Democrats. Republicans would gain the power to run investigations, including the power to subpoena officials. The House also has the power to hold individuals in contempt of Congress if they fail to comply with a subpoena. While rare, contempt of Congress can result in criminal charges. Trump advisor Steve Bannon was sentenced to 4 months of jail time time just this month, and a Congressional committee recently voted to subpoena former President Trump himself. Republicans are extremely likely to target Attorney General Merrick Garland and top DOJ officials, who they view as politically motivated. Garland wouldn’t even be the first Democratic Attorney General held in contempt of Congress-Republicans have previously voted to hold Clinton AG Janet Reno and Obama AG Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress and compelled Hillary Clinton to testify before Congress during the 2016 Presidential election. Conservatives have routinely raised the specter of major investigations into the President’s son, Hunter Biden as well, and evidence already exists that implicates Hunter Biden in a wide variety of crimes.
